Featured Cherub: Jayden Gilbert

Featured Cherub of the week is cherub Jayden Gilbert.  Jayden is the son of Alicia Gilbert, our Oregon Hospital Angel for CHERUBS.  Jayden lived for 23 days here on earth and is forever in our hearts.  Both Alicia and her mom, Shelly Moore, have done so much to raise awareness for CDH and help other families affected by CDH.

Written by Shelly Moore, our Oregon State Representative for CHERUBS and Jayden’s Grandma: “Every CDH family has their own personal CDH Awareness Day....the day they are told their child with be born with Congenital Diaphragmatic Hernia and will have to battle for their life.

Featured Volunteer: Lisa Baxter

Hi!  My name is Lisa Baxter.  I live in Burke, VA with my husband Jeff, and our CDH survivor Lindsey.  We were diagnosed at 20 weeks with one heart defect, then another at 24 weeks, and finally CDH at 27 weeks.  At the time, we were living in South Carolina. We were referred to Columbia, Charleston and then heard about the team at Cincinnati Children’s Hospital.  Jeff and I relocated to Cincinnati for almost 4 months to give Lindsey the best chance possible after being told she had less than a 50% chance of survival.  Lindsey was born in February 2014 and was in the NICU for 2 ½ months.  Lindsey is an amazing baby and is my hero!  We also have a 4 legged child, Elsa, who loves her sister very much.  I work part time as an independent consultant assisting organizations on their future site selections for upcoming meetings/events.

Featured Doctor: Dr. C. Jason Smithers, MD

We would like to thank Dr. C. Jason Smithers, MD, with Boston Children’s Hospital for Bringing Hope Around the World to our CDH families.

Anthony Croce, dad to cherub Jordan, had this to say about Dr. Smithers:

“I would like to give tribute to Children’s Hospital of Boston. We found out 6 months along that our daughter, Jordan, had LCDH. Dr. Smithers and his medical team were our family’s saving grace. They went above and beyond to explain not only what was going on but to ensure us our baby girl was going to be in wonderful hands. Here we are 5 years later and our baby girl is starting kindergarten and you would never know the rough start she had. Our family feels like we will always be in debt to Dr. Smithers and his team.”

Featured Volunteer: Nicki Young

Nicki Young is the mother of Anderson, born on September 21, 2012.  At her 38 week checkup, 8 days prior to Anderson’s birth, they learned that he had left sided CDH.  This was not detected on his 18-week ultrasound. Anderson spent 28 days in the NICU at Banner Desert Medical Center in Mesa, AZ. During the first few hours of life, Anderson was on “stand by” to be life-flighted to another local hospital and placed on ECMO. Fortunately, they were able to stabilize Anderson.  He had his repair laparoscopically at 3 ½ days old and taken off all breathing machines by 9 days.  Nicki’s oldest brother Riley Kimball Worthen, passed away from CDH in Utah, early in the 70’s, after living only 8 hours. Anderson and his uncle share the same middle name of Kimball. This was planned BEFORE they found out Anderson had CDH.  Anderson still has some complications that stem from being born with CDH.  He loves life and is so happy all the time, despite some medical setbacks.
